Results - May 21, 2000

Distractions make the difference. Sunday, May 21, was a wild day at Fiesta Island. The normally peaceful setting for the time trial was vibrating with activity and persistent traffic. Due to a permitting mistake, multiple special use permits were issued for precisely the same time as the time trial. No less than three sporting events were competing for road access. A water ski event was happening on the backside of the island and an Over the Line tournament was being held at the OTL area. The OTL tournament consisted of 600+ kids and 100+ vehicles.

San Diego Bicycle Club stepped up to the challenge. A quick plan was put into place. A third of the island was coned off redirecting traffic onto the shoulder. A parade of cars bobbed and weaved down the eastside of the island in the dirt.

The distraction from all the goings-on took everyone's mind off the ensuing pain. The vast majority of the times were significantly better than 3 weeks ago. Almost everyone enjoyed better times. The following, Justin Forbes, Bernadette Brake, Jon Isaacs, Ken Moody, Thomas Colley, Bob Barney, Becky Sox, Susan Cooper, Don Elling, and Margaret Nolan improved their times by 30 seconds or more from their April 21 times. Susan Cooper came within 13 seconds of breaking the women's overall record and walking away with the $50 cash prize.

Island records did fall. It was an especially strong day for the women. Susan Cooper's 29:27 broke her own record of 30:14 for the third consecutive time in the women's 30 to 39 category. Sue Shook's 30:30 bumped out Adrienne Brian's year old record of 30:59 in the women's 40 to 49 category. Elaine Miller's 31:49 shattered a year old record by Janet Kerber of 35:31. I would think that we will be reading more about these three women at the State Championship TT in June. They have established themselves as the women to beat. Lastly, a new record was posted which will be called Partially Faired Recumbent. Ben Huntley rode a 34:27 in his red machine.

In the almost category; Dave Spangler's 28:00 came within 2 seconds of meeting his own record in the 50 to 59 men's category. Daniel Plummer and Philip Coats did an awesome tandem ride. They rode a 25:01 in the men's tandem division. They were 7 seconds shy of the record set by Shaun Wallace and Paul Coulson.

Ben Huntley was the first to ride a recumbent with a fairing. Because the course is closed and there are no sharp turns, this could be the beginning of a new breed of recumbent at the island. The following categories are to be added to the record list to try and keep the event fair for all; Fully Faired Recumbent, Partially Faired Recumbent, and Unfaired Recumbent. Andreas Weigel is the man to beat in the recumbent category. He has ridden a 26:46 in an unfaired recumbent.

The hand cyclists joined us as a group for the first time. Unfortunately, our directions to them may not have been clear enough. There was confusion as to the use of the short route or the long route. This will be clear in the future and we plan to host the group again. In fact, they will be encouraged to join us for our last meet on October 15. The HC's rode two laps and definitely can meet the challenge. The venue is ideal for them. Course records will not be posted for the group this time because of the unfortunate confusion.
