4/30/00 Results

Weather Conditions: The morning opened with a light breeze up to 3 mph. As the event got under way, the breeze dropped off to the point where it was not registering on the wind speed indicator. Temperature was in the low 70's. A perfect day to set new course records.

Turnout: 126 time trialer's joined us on the island. That included 7 teams and 7 tandems and 5 juniors. Thanks for your support. Everyone got a free Fiesta Island water bottle.

Records Shattered: 5 course records were broken 4/30/00. The all men's team, House of D, broke the old record of 26:17 set by Jane's with a 25:53. Mixed team, Rancho's, broke the old record of 28:52 with a 27:55. Susan Cooper broke her old record of 30.36 for the women's 30-39 with a 30:14. Mark Fitzgerald, broke his old record of 26:50 for men 18-29 with a 26:34. Bob Bergen's, old record of 34.08, for the men 70-79 was shattered by Mario Bau with a 31.02.

Interesting Tidbits: Susan Cooper was the only rider to do TWO time trials on 4/30/00. She had it all figured out. If she got there early enough, she could do an individual TT, and then race again with a team. She set a new course record of 30:36 for women 30-39. She then joined her team and set a new course record for a mixed team with an incredible 27:55.

Shaun Wallace can always create a story. He started the TT on his fixed gear road bike. He took about 4 pedal strokes and broke his handlebar or stem. Thinking he was sidelined for the day, he stood around and watched everyone else do their TT's. Then he remembered that he had his track bike in the car. He did an impressive 27:39 on his track bike with 88 gear inches.

USCF State Championship TTT: For those of you interested in the USCF Team Time Trial, there has been quite a bit of confusion. Everyone that has been doing the Fiesta Island events is aware of San Diego Bicycle Club's intention to put on the first ever State TTT. During some confusion, a piece of the state TTT was awarded to MTS Cycling. After much discussion with Jan Luke-Hamasaki, USA Cycling Regional Representative, we have agreed to the following:

    1. On June 10th there will be only open class TTT competition. This is consistent with MTS Cycling's current plans.
    2. SDBC will put on the remainder of the State Championship TTT on September 10th for age graded categories. The distance will be 40k (almost). The current plan is to have 3 cumulative age groups for men and 3 cumulative age groups for women (subject to change). This is almost consistent with our original plan. The only difference is, we had planned an "open" category also. It is our plan to have cumulative age categories that include everyone.

I hope this explanation helps everyone understand the State Championship TTT plans. It is unfortunate that the first State TTT got off to a confusing start, but SDBC thinks that the plan is workable. We hope that you will agree.
